How to Season Carbon Steel for Grills, Burger Smashers and Griddles

How to Season Carbon Steel for Burger Smashers, Griddles, and Grills

Carbon steel and cast iron cookware require proper seasoning before use. Seasoning creates a durable, food-safe, non-stick surface while protecting the steel from rust and corrosion.

This guide applies to carbon steel burger smashers, grill grates, griddle tops, pans, and woks.

Carbon Steel Seasoning Wax

Our Carbon Steel Seasoning Wax is formulated specifically for high-heat cooking surfaces.

It blends:

Beeswax

Grapeseed oil

Canola oil

The oils provide high smoke points for proper polymerization, while beeswax helps bind and protect the seasoning layer. This blend is ideal for initial seasoning as well as daily maintenance.

What You’ll Need

Carbon steel or cast-iron product

Carbon Steel Seasoning Wax (or high-smoke-point oil)

Grill or griddle

Paper towels or lint-free cloth

Tongs

Heat-resistant gloves

Initial Seasoning Instructions

1. Apply Seasoning to a Clean Surface

Start with a clean, dry surface

Warm the steel slightly to help the seasoning spread

Using tongs and a paper towel, apply a very thin, even coat to all surfaces

Wipe off any excess — the surface should not look wet or dripping

Tip: Less oil is better. Thick layers can become sticky.

2. Heat & Bake

Place the product on the grill

Preheat to 350–450°F

Heat for 30–60 minutes until the seasoning polymerizes (bakes on)

Light smoking is normal

The steel will darken as the seasoning sets.

3. Cool & Repeat

Turn off the grill

Allow the steel to cool completely

Repeat the seasoning process 2–3 times before the first cook for best results

Each layer improves durability and non-stick performance.

Maintenance (After Each Use)

Warm & Oil

After cooking, while the steel is still warm (not hot), apply a light coat of seasoning wax or oil

Wipe evenly across all surfaces

This maintains the seasoning and prevents rust

Avoid soaking or aggressive scrubbing.

Warnings & Safety

Fire Hazard Warning
Oil-soaked rags or paper towels may spontaneously combust.

Do not leave oil-soaked materials in piles

Dispose of properly or store in a fire-safe container
